May 5 on 5

I am so grateful to have been invited to join an amazingly talented group of women to share five on five each month.  I have been away from the blogging world for several months now.  We've been adjusting over the last year to life without my dad, me finishing school, and changes in my job and our every day life.  I'm excited to be back in this space again and most of all to be creative with my camera again.  I decided to share some of our Easter pictures from last month since it was such a beautiful day and it's been such a long time since I've captured some memories of my family with my camera.  My kids have grown so much, but even as they get bigger I'm hoping to continue documenting our life here.  They enjoyed the Easter egg hunt this year.  They were each assigned two colors to find so that it was fair and fun for each of them.  Let's just say the yellow eggs were a little tough to find with so many dandelions in the pasture.  It was a fun day though, and I'm grateful that even though they are getting older they still enjoy spending these special days together.  It's my favorite place to be.  For more five on five head over to my good friend Naomi's blog.  Enjoy.

Us

Gratitude Day 1- The first thing that I think of when I contemplate blessings in my life is family. I honestly don't know where I would be without them. I am so grateful for all that they teach me, for the happiness that they share with me, and for knowing that they will always be my soft place to fall. They are my team, and I would be completely lost without them. I love them more than words can say. I am so grateful for us.

Driving

Each year at this time during the summer we gather the family together and head out to the field to haul hay.  It comes every year during the hottest time of the summer, and there never seems to be a convenient time.  It's a job that each of us dreads, and although we start out pretty strong, we fade quickly as we load, unload, and reload the trailer several times in an effort to fill up the barn.  This year was no different.  The one big change for this year was that the kids have grown, and therefore their help is much more valuable.  It's no secret that my boy dreams about driving his dad's truck.  He loves riding in it each time it comes out of the garage, but every once in a while he gets the privilege of sitting on JM's lap to finish the drive down the short road that enters our driveway and each time this happens he is beyond thrilled.  Each year at hay hauling time he is always hopeful that he will finally get a turn to drive the truck and trailer.  Each year we have told him that he isn't big enough and to ask again next summer.  His summer finally arrived.  On our second evening of hauling hay, we started out with just JM and I and my sweet boy.  He sat patiently in the back seat as we discussed how things were going to work without a driver.  His eyes were wide and eager as he waited to hear if he would finally get his chance, and with no other options we relented and allowed him to climb up front and into the driver's seat.  JM gave him a quick lesson on how all of the controls worked after moving the seat forward as far as it would go, and suddenly my boy realized his dream of getting to drive the hay truck.  I must admit that in the beginning I was a little nervous, but honestly he did an amazing job.
He did a great job at always checking his mirrors to see if there was hay on either side, and he kept his foot on the brake just enough to allow the truck to creep slowly enough that we could work and yet still be efficient.
He also did a great job of watching the stackers on top of the load, and he eased on and off of the brake and the gas just enough to allow them to work without throwing them off.  He was an expert.
Now and then he would ask for a water break.  Apparently driving the truck is hard work.  When you are small enough that your legs just reach the pedals, and you nervous about doing a good job it tends to really take it out of you.  This was not a job I ever experienced.  I was reminded of that as I watched my boy and his dad interact during this short stop.
JM inherited these hay hauling chaps from my dad.  He used to wear these when I was a young girl.  I remember how hard he worked when he wore them.  The sweat on his brow, the hay stuck to his face, and these chaps on his legs.  I rode in the front of the cab with my grandpa, and unlike my boy I didn't experience being a helper as much as I acted as more of a cheerleader.  Dad protected me from doing any of the hard stuff, but it was still something that we enjoyed doing together.  It was a family ordeal just as it is for my little family now.  Hauling hay was part of our relationship just as it is for my boy and JM.
While my boy did the driving this year, my girls worked hard as well.  Lou helped with unloading the trailer by rolling the bales off, and Seej worked on building up her muscles.  She's working on her throwing and hitting arm and this seemed like the best workout for that purpose.  I was surprised by her strength.  Not only could she lift the bales this year, but she could actually throw them on the trailer too.
It's good to have another year of hauling hay behind us, and I'm grateful that we had so much help.  Between the hooligans, our friends, and the rest of the family we accomplished our goal and made some new memories at the same time.

The Best Part of Summer

This is one of the first weeks of summer that life has actually slowed down just a bit. We are usually running so fast that we don't get to enjoy much quality time with all of us together. This week has consisted of lots of time together in the yard relaxing in the chairs, laying in the grass, and playing catch. The hooligans have been soaking in quality time with their dad, and with each other. My girl and her brother have been working on his baseball skills. I love sitting back and watching all of the relationships develop in our tiny spot of the world that we call home. It's the best part of summer for me so far.

Pushing

Summer is passing by so quickly.  It seems like we have been busier than usual lately.  We haven't had much time to make many memories together, or maybe it's just that I'm missing those moments when they do happen.  Between the pace of summer so far and the grief that I'm still carrying I feel like I'm in a bit of a daze most of the time.  I can't seem to get my thoughts in order, and I can't seem to stay focused.  The days come and go and I have many lists in my mind of things that need to be accomplished and things that I really want to do, but I feel like I move in circles instead of making progress.  I think I'm still trying to find my sea legs.  In the midst of what feels like confusion I do continue to find lots of moments to be grateful for.  It's the little things that I love the very most.  It's the simplest of days when I get to just slow down and be a mom that still bring me the most joy, and it's days like this one when we got to go to the "beach" that re-fill my bucket and remind me of all the things that I have to feel gratitude for.  Every little bit of this trip that I took with my family and some good friends included all of the simple things that I love the very most.  The wind in my hair, sand on my toes, seagulls squawking, and the water lapping at the sand.  Throw in the laughter shared between good friends and conversation with new ones, and you have many minutes that have passed that could not have been better spent.  Since my dad passed away in April I have been pushing.  Pushing to move on.  Pushing to get back to "normal".  I'm starting to realize that I just need to slow down and let things be.  I want to be able to fully experience days like this one more often, and that means a whole lot less pushing.

Trying

Trying hard to get back into the swing of things. I spent this day with Spongebob playing my favorite game of volleyball with my favorite people, and then wrestling in the grass with my sweet boy. I think summer is going to be a great time of healing for me.

Room 231

Took a trip away last weekend. It was all mixed up with so many different emotions. I watched my girl on the path to her dreams winning her first softball game of the year, and at the same time I watched my dad step into the dream of being on vacation. Something he hasn't done in over 10 years. Turning my head from side to side and seeing my girl smiling on one side and my dad laughing on the other was heavenly. They were both courageous this weekend, and I was thrilled to witness it. I couldn't help but be inspired by our room key, and I had to snap a shot. "The key to your dreams is in your hands." Those words could not be more true.

This Sled

As my hooligans get older it seems like I have a greater desire for them to experience some of the things that I did when I was their age.  I want to break them away from their electronic devices and show them a world that I know they will love.  We had a major snow day here in Utah yesterday.  The snow started on Thursday and continued to dump throughout the day on Friday.  It presented the perfect opportunity to dig out the old sled and take them for a ride.  This isn't new to them of course.  We have taken them sledding near our home much like I used to do when I was young, but this was the day for them to experience sledding exactly as I once did.  My dad used to drag me on this very same sled on these very same roads behind his truck.  I remember laughing and swerving from side to side and doing a ton of praying that I could get the sled to stop when the truck did so that I didn't meet that metal bumper with my face.  As luck would have it that never happened, and all of my memories of sledding with my dad are good ones.  It was something we did often since the snowplow didn't visit the roads that I lived on.  Yesterday my hooligans experienced the same thing.  It was funny to hear them talk about how foreign the sled looked to them in comparison to the ones they are used to using.  They were a little fearful of it at first, but of course Doop had no problem volunteering to jump on board and his giggles were contagious as the girls listened from the back of the car.  They were excited for their own turn which was much longer than the ones they are used to near our own home.  Driving them up and down the long snow covered road brought back so many memories for me, and when we were through they went in the house and stuck their feet in front of the fire and talked about the fun that they had experienced.  I couldn't help but smile as I drifted back and forth between my own memories and the one we were making together.  I hope they get to experience this again.  I hope that someday they can share this picture with their own children and describe to them what this antique object is.  It might be old, but this sled has served it's purpose well.

On the day after...

On the day after Thanksgiving we loaded up everything warm, good food, and some firewood and headed into the mountains for our annual Christmas tree hunt.  It was a beautiful day on the mountain and the sixty degree weather made us linger as long as possible.  We trekked around in the snow until we found the perfect tree.  We drug it down the mountainside to the truck where we had a small time out from the fun for lunch, and then we grabbed the sleds and headed back to the slopes.  The hooligans were thrilled to find the perfect hill and they slid around until they were completely soaked and exhausted.  We stayed warm next to the fire while we watched all of the fun.  This has always been one of my favorite traditions, but this year was the best time ever.

Taking a break

The Thanksgiving holiday brought about a much needed break. From work, from the mundane, from the world that we know. We escaped to the mountains to find the perfect Christmas tree, and we made some amazing memories while we were there. So much more to share soon!

Together Time

Day 5 of The Gratitude Project- Today I am grateful for together time. With all of our crazy schedules sometimes life can get hectic. I love when we slow down and make time to be together to laugh and make new memories. The gift of time spent together is invaluable.

Find Laughter

A Thursday thought for you.
Last weekend we went out hunting for frogs.  It was cold and it was muddy, and sadly we didn't catch any frogs.  It didn't matter though because we had a blast.  The wind whipped our hair, and we got our toes in the mud, and most of all we laughed.  Wherever you are in your life I suggest finding laughter.  It will indeed make you happy!

Life At My House...

This month our theme for The Creativity Project  is Life At My House.  I decided to take this opportunity to share more about who we are.  First and foremost, life at our house is busy to say the least.  We have many responsibilities, and the clock doesn't slow down to fit everything in.  In order for me to retain my sanity, I do a ton of planning.  I map out my week including daily and weekly tasks, school lunches for each child, dinners, and additional tasks that I hope to accomplish.  All of this planning is done in this happy corner of my home. I spend a lot of time here at this makeshift desk/kitchen table planning our days, paying bills, editing photos, and organizing my daughter's softball team.  This corner of the house is used often, and I don't mind sitting here a bit because as you can see there is a large window and beautiful light!
Although I do have another job outside of my home, being a mom is my favorite job ever.  I find the most happiness on the days when I have the opportunity to take care of my family and my home.  Experiencing every day moments like this one are absolutely priceless, and I'm so grateful that I get to witness and be a part of them.
During the times when we do all find ourselves at home all at the same time the normal things take place.  Chores, laundry, homework, a bit of playing, and we follow that up with bath time.
On my days off I have been working hard to plan out good after school snacks for my hooligans.  Right now it's a bit easier because of all of the fresh fruit and vegetables that we have been abundantly blessed with.  I snapped a shot of this snack last week.  Too bad these beauties won't last all year.
This leads me to my very favorite place in our entire home.  I think I spend more time here than anywhere.  My favorite spot is right here in front of our kitchen sink.  The light here is stunning, and I love that the window is right above the sink.  I can check on the kids playing outside, work on washing dishes up, or spend time preparing dinner here.  It's an inviting place to me where I always feel at peace.  It's a place where our family gathers together often.  The kitchen is not only where our meals are made and shared, but homework also happens here, and let's not forget about my makeshift office.  It occupies a corner of this lovely space too.  I'm a bit obsessed with kitchens, and I dream someday about having one with lots of windows.  Don't believe me?  Check out my Pinterest board dedicated solely to kitchens that have qualities that I dream about.
One thing that we try to do as a family each year is plant and tend to a garden.  You may have noticed the sink full of produce that we gathered for the week from our bountiful patch of dirt.  This is something we do together as a family.  It's something we enjoy.  Hands and toes in the dirt with the sun on our backs waiting for the goods to grow.

We grow everything from cucumbers to watermelon, cantaloupe to corn, tomatoes to peppers (bell, jalapeno, and anaheim), squash to zucchini, and let's not forget about the pumpkins for Halloween!
We tried something new this year and planted sunflowers that my little man started growing at school.  He has been thrilled to watch them quickly grow, and I now see him craning his neck to see the huge flowers that have busted out on top.  I forgot to mention that our garden is at Grandma's house.  We spend a lot of time there.  It's also where we keep our horses.
It's also the place where the hooligans get to be free to use their imaginations and get the most out of playing.  There are lots of bugs to be captured here, kites to be flown, and lots of wide open space to just run and play.  They also like to swim here.  This is a scene I look forward to every summer.  Swimming suits and bath towels hanging on the line always means that fun memories have just been made.
There's one more important thing I forgot to mention about Life At Our House.  We absolutely love spending time together.  We do it any chance we get, and when we all go our separate ways we look forward to coming back together to hear about what has gone on in the day.  Part of this conversation always includes talking about the things that come out of the hooligan's backpacks.  We talk about their school work and how they are doing, and we do our best to promote their confidence.  We started out by hanging artwork on the refrigerator, but it quickly filled up and now you will find their artwork throughout our entire home.  It is proudly displayed on the walls and even the bedroom and bathroom doors.  Although I definitely have my favorite hang out spots in our home, and although our home is our home because our things are there, I know that the most beautiful part of our home is the people who occupy it.  Life at my house is all about family.  It's all about spending time with my very favorite people in the world.  Life at my house is beautiful.  You can continue the circle of wonderful contributors for The Creativity Project by seeing what life looks like at my friend Julia's house.  We are also honored to have a guest contributor this month.  Check out life at Susan Keller's house too!  These amazing photographers will not disappoint you!
